Thank you for considering a Leadership role at the 10th Calgary!
Please follow the steps below to start your journey
Step 1: Volunteer application form. The fastest way to register is to visit www.myscouts.ca. If you or your child are registered, login with the email you provided (you receive Scouts Canada emails on it). On the left taskbar click "Register Member", this will take you to the find a group page. On this page enter postal code T2S 0R8 (or your own). Scroll down until you see the 10th Calgary. This should now have a "Register Volunteer" button under it, click the button and follow the prompts! You can also use this form, but we will require a signed hardcopy original. Either method requires the email addresses of 5 references. This can be a friend, coworker, relative, or spouse. It is helpful to let them know to expect an email questionnaire in the next few days after the form is submitted.
Step 2: Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening. If you have done one online within the last 6 months for another organization you can login and share the result with Scouts Canada, if not follow these steps. The group will provide you with a request letter. Go to this website https://policeinformationcheck.calgarypolice.ca. During the process you will need to upload the request letter (as letter from organization), and input the VOAN "# 1694 So 1108" which will share the result with Scouts Canada and lets them cover the fee. You will also need to upload a scan or pictures of your ID. This can be drivers licence (front and back), Passport, Alberta Health Card, Nexus card, Birth Certificate, etc. Scouter Colin recommends taking pictures with your phone (front and back), emailing them to your computer and uploading them to the site. The good news is that when this process is done you will get an email. You can then go back into the system and share the results for 6 months with other orgs. You first have to share with Scouts Canada (even though they already have it) then you can share with the CBE, sports leagues, girl guides, boys and girls clubs etc. This way you don’t have to do multiple checks like you did in the past to volunteer for field trips, Scouts, sports etc.
Step 3: Interview. You will be interviewed by two existing Leaders or Scouts Canada support staff to ensure you understand the roles and responsibities required to effectively administer the Scouts Canada program and philosopy.
Step 4: Online training. The introductory part of the training effectively combines what would have been the old steps 4-8 into one process. The training program is getting better but seems to prefer Google Chrome or Firefox. Please complete this training as soon as possible to begin your new role. You will need to visit www.myscouts.ca again. Once you are logged in you can begin your online training. In the left taskbar click "David Huestis Training". Follow the instructions carefully. As a new leader there should be some training courses assigned to your profile. You will complete a number of tasks, including signing a code of conduct, youth safety, and a large introductory training module 1 which covers all sections. Please have a look at Scouter Colin's directions available here. The interface has changed a bit since he first did them, but it will help you get the general idea! Only after this is completed are you technically allowed to serve as a Leader, although in a limited capacity. You do not count towards ratio yet (this is explained in the training). Please consider finishing the next steps as soon as you can.
Step 5: Section Specific WoodBadge 1. In the David Huestis training you have completed module 1. You should now complete modules 2-5 which are specific to either Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, or Group Committee. In these modules you will learn how to run a program for your section. Once all of these modules are completed you have finished your training and are a full leader and count towards ratio. In Beavers for example, you need 2 Leaders at all times for 1-10 Beavers, 3 Leaders for up to 15, 4 for 20 etc. The more Leaders we have the better prepared we are for contingencies, if one Leader is sick we still need 3 full Leaders to run a Beaver meeting. Having a bare minimum to meet ratio is not an effective way to run a group!
